      <title>About "Fontaine1917" by Marcel Duchamp</title>
      <description>

If one Japanese who feel that “Fontaine 1917” is splendid work, when he looks at it for the first time, I think he is strange or too eccentric .It took for 20 years for me to understand the meaning of that great object. But at the first glance for everyone, it’s only looks as a classic urinal itself. Nothing but a classical “urinal” .One of my aquaintance say,

“ so I don`t like modern art. Generally speaking, so to speak, modern art is self- complacent. Nobody feel it beautiful who looks “Fontain 1917” with a little water falling.

I see. I agree with this idea. It’s frank opinion, I agree. I think perhaps he is standing more closer to Marcel Duchamp than many other spectators who glances and think it as a funny forerunner of avant-garde art in early 20 th century, on smile. But I think it is also necesarry for us to feel like him. There is only one entrance to understand the meanning of “Fontaine 1917” .

When it is used as a “urinal” ( propper usage ) ,it’s fixed on wall in standing style( center hole : hole for water supply to lay upper side ) . On the other hand, “Fontaine1917”is exhibited in lying style whenever in show. But it looks as only one “urinal”even if shown in lying style. And then ,why Marcel Duchamp insisted on his urinal as art ,and disputed about modern art, why this incident has seriously influenced many people ,inspire many artists ,even now today?

Marcel Duchamp was a French man, born in Normandy ( north of France ) 1887, and emmigrated to United States of America in 1915 during WWⅠ. And flourished mainly in New York. ”Fontaine1917" is one of his works when he was thirty. In addition , this work is new material , not used one, I hear. He bought it and entried .This story is very popular , so I won't repeat here.

We occur to one thing, when we travel in Europe where Duchamp was grown up. Human made springs were lay-outed here and there in many country (having long history) , even in the pastral town .They are as if essential facilities for city planning. For example ,famous Trevi Fountain in Rome ( in Italy. not in France ) made in 1762, have been loved throughout more than two centuries, perhaps forever.

Well …….do you find out something?

Poseidon Statue is good, but something else….
This is “Fontaine1917”↓please look at the edge .

This man is Mr.Duchamp↑. Smoking at his exhibition hall.

In short,
“Fontaine1917” is one kind of architectural miniature models sized about 10 meters heights in the idea of Duchamp!
People in the U.S or Europe must imagine the completed building when they look at “Fontaine1917”! We,Japanese , don’t know the springs in the town here and there. One more thing, the idea that springs are essential facilities of city element, don't exist in Japanese city planning, traditionally. His work is beyond our span of thought. If Monsieur Duchamp is here, I would say to him, please explain details more about “Fontaine1917”, we, one of Asian race, have no history like your mother countries. (living in stone made house , and our city planning is different from yours…and so on.)

By the way , I like the movie “Legend of 1900” . Japanese title is “A pianist on the sea” , directed by Tornatore,Itarian movie director. The reason why I talk about this movie is that I think it is the best film showing the image of early America and dreams of emmigrants from Europe. They farewelled their mother country Europe, emmigrated in America having one kind of sense like sadness and hope. More than 100 years had passed from Declaration of Independence , Statue of Liberty , gifted by France, was beautiful. Main character ,1900( Nineteenhundred is his name ) decided to live on the land of America ,step down from his ship ,stood on deck , and looked at the big city of New York, many skyscrapers , noise of cars….. . He hesitated to get down, and at last , decided to live on ship throughout all his life ,and came back to his home ship over Atlantic Ocean . New York was discribed as so terrible world in this movie. I don't know whether springs like that of in Europe exist or not. But perhaps Duchamp felt that springs like that of Europe is neccesary here , New York. And It must be designed as modern style. I also feel that Old New Yok is too cool ,lack of elegance because the major idee was only functionalism or capitalism etc. Duchamp must think that new style spring fitted in new world must be created , as the facility of new city planning concept.

We, Japanese, already have seen new archtectural style, for example “Odaiba”

Replica : Statue of liberty in Odaiba ↑

Thank you for your reading my long essay . And then , Don’t you feel the line of “Fontaine1917” looks like line of veil , Virgin Marry wears? Don't you feel it more beautiful? I feel the heart of European people in this curious work:“Fontaine1917”．Ｌoving their own countris , loving their own history, and above all the willness toward the future.

European people usually see springs from big one to little one in their daily life. And their ancestors also saw springs here and there. From the another standpoint of view, these springs have been seeing lives of people for long time. Duchamp's thought must be the continuation of daily life in New York ,the feeling must be “Our new world lacks something important!.”

He was born in Normandy, emigrated in New York when he was 28 years old.Young Duchamp drew a lot of landscapes about future world .

This is my degital composition drawing. Hoping near by Duchamp’s dream.

How do you think about?
.
( Dear for all Asian fellows who love history of modern art )

      <title>Band of brothers</title>
      <description>Band of brothers
2001 / directed by Steven Spierberg &amp; Tom Hanks / TV drama ( not movie )
10 Stories of E( easy ) commpany belongs to 101 American airborne division
Battle situation is south of England ( facing to operation Normandy as one of invadion forces ),coast of Normandy( north of France ), Holand , over Rhein river , west of German in 1944-1945 ,second World War.
This TV drama contains interviews of a few real members of 101 airborne division as prologue , These old men are survivers through that days and talk about their memories about their fighting days , slowly and realistic touch , as if realy standing now in that days . talks about comradeship , cross firing , the enemy German souldiers , meaning of mission , meaning of life . It’s sounds like a fantazy but never fantazy but real history we find it.
Each of the stories lasts about 1 hour . So totaly 10 hours ! It’s impossible to describe realistic mood about that historical days under movie circumstance . Because only 2 or 3 hours is not enogh to describe “band of brothers”
we can be brought to the trance into the nightmare throghout these 10 stories.

War movies made in post real WWⅡ about 1950-60’s are easy to get today. Because their copyrights are timeover, so many cheap DVD discs on sale , we can see them in our city today. But these old movies made by low technique, without SFX( special effect ) so we cannot feel their reality , in spite of the staff of them probably knew real war . But recently the technique of making movies has developed unbelievable level especialy Spierberg works in hollywood. From the standpoint of militaly maniac eyes , in this TV drama , we can see many kind of Armored Fighting Vehicles . For example strumgeschutz, Jagdpanter( in action! marvelous! ) , M4 sharman tanks with short cannon type . In America , There are many military collectors , and I hear that they offer to supply their collection with pleasure , when big movie project running.

I cannot forget the words of real 101airborne div. .This old soldier said like this meaning , not exactly the same words but like this.
“ I was born in small town. In my hometown , three men committed suicide in that days because they couldn’t go war.
Age is different from today.”

<title>"May be by Van Gogh" ? , I've never seen such way of showing...... </title>
<description>About the picture exhibited in Van Gogh exhibition in national museum with this
comment “May be by Van Gogh”

Supplementary explanation about 4/23 article of my blog.

I found a piece of picture never believed by Van Gogh. I want to try to argue about this picture exhibited with comment “ cannot decide as original “ I want to say the reason why I think that picture is an imitation . Every one who loves Van Gogh should shout that “this picture is imitation !” The reason is this. First of all, we can see the technique of powerful spotting brush work only in the latest days in his middle thirties. We mustn’t forget this fact. Van Gogh had not used this way of painting style until this time. Everyone connect this powerful spotting brush work with Gogh , but this style was found after his long trainning , practis , and agony . He determined to use it as his really original way of painting .style. This powerful spotting style is estabished as Van Gogh’s style in 1887,88,89,durling three years, his last days before suicide. And we can see it in his works only in these days. Most of Gogh’s masterpieces are painted in these days when he lived in Ar les and San Remo. It is simple and decisive truth that this touch of painting is made harmony with the color of ground . Essence of Gogh’s Art is this. The brightness of dot makes harmony with level of brightness of ground everywhere. Dot painting is supreme his technique,so he never dot red or yellow on simple black ground unconciously. No painter should paint in such way using his supreme technique. I found many parts painted using these unconcious way of dot spotting painting style in that picture of flower in Gogh’s exibision. I think he placed each color of dot very slowly, never tapping quickly.
One more thing , when Gogh paints flower , he doesn’t paint flower it self. The reason why many people say he painted “ Not only physical existance” . He painted not flower (or chair etc.) but “life and fate and symbol from his standpoint of christian view". This is the essence of his masterpieces . But that picture in Gogh’s exhibision is “The picture of flower itself”. And much more worse, painted the beautifulness of flower and singing a song aloud. I couldn’t find the element of life , fate, christian view. In short, it simply celebrated the beautiness of flower , I felt.

But I’m a human being , and also Van Gogh. So I think he must sometimes paint dull work and failure . There is no artist who paint good works only . VanGogh too. There must be a lot of his dull works or failures in this world that he laughed saying “ This is my dull work.” There must be a lot of works that researcher say to himself, “Uuu……m, This is truly painted by Gogh, but I cannot recommend as a true work of Gogh” So I cannot believe me because I have only one image by seeing only his best works and masterpieces. If the man who paint that picture is Van Gogh. I want to make curators explain like this ,”This picture seems to be painted by Gogh . But if it is true , This picture must be his trial exersise or failure”. It’s the honesty for spectator. . Please show us skill ,curator of natinal museum have, insted of pending judgement, please.

      <title>Dog type and Cat type</title>
<description>I don't believe that human charactor could be classified by 4 blood types.
But recently I become to believe two typical type of human charactor , cat-type and dog-one.
Human charactor could be classified into only two type , cat and Dog.
I discribe the charactor of cat at first because I love it.

Cat is one of animals that has nature of waiting when they hunt.So they never smell of their own body. And don't want to stay facing wind. Most important thing for them is to hide themselves for fear that being found by their game. It is the wisdom for their life. So everytime they lick their own body all over.
One more thing, they don't move exept in case of necessary. The reson why they can run fast ,jump highly , fight extrordinary on unbelievable level in case of emergency is depend on this charactor of nature. While they have no power of endurance. In short, they store their energy under usual circumstances.
Cat as a pet don't obey us human, keeping their own pace.My pace animal.

On the other hand, dog is completely different from cat.Completely opposite charactor they have .
They tend to hunt together , not alone. And showing teamworks as usual. The smell of their own is not important so they don't take care of themselves , so smell bad . They have toughness and endurance, but lack of quickness in case of emergency being compared to cat.
Dogs as a pet obey us human completely , especialy when they are trained. And show us perfect loyalty that cat never have.

Generaly speaking , dogs and cats tend to hate each other. Similary , Man having charactor of dog tend not to keep good relationship with the man having that of cat ,
I feel.

      <title>great ukiyoe masters 展</title>
<description>ukiyoe means " picture of secular world".One kind of Japanese printing based on the carved woody board and color ink in each stages of printing processes.
Many famous Japanese masters worked in Edo age ( about 17-19th century ).And many ukiyoe printings were brought out from Japan to United States or Europe in Meiji Age( about 19th century).
This exhibision in Shoto museum is nice because of low price and high level line up ,and I felt elegance of Japanese ancient culture.Hirosige became my favorite more than Hokusai today. His works are artistic. On the other hand,Hokusai makes us feel strict craftsmanship.

      <title>Surrealism and art exhibition</title>
<description>Now being held in Yokohama museum , sakuragityo, kanagawa prefecture. 1,100 yen . Reasonable price. And massive line-up that you'll be satisfied with this show.Today I knew the fact that many of these works are the collection of Yokohama museum itself (amazing fact).
Surrealism is the movement of early 20's century mainly in new York or western Europe. This trend made our mind more free against traditional way of thinking under strict molality. Infruenced by the theory of Sigmund Freud, for example, in that days. And emphasized sexial energy namely "libido".
Artists following , Giorgio de chirico , Hans Bellmer, Rene Magritte, Paul klee, Joseph Cornell, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Salvador Dali, Paul Delvaux, and so on.
In addition to the name of Joseph Beuys , my favorite.
When I was a junior high school student , I saw Dali works. And became to be intrested in arts. It is not rare for boys in adolescence to be intrested in surrealist.Me , only one of such fun.The image of these arts are not chidish or funny but serious and poetic indeed.
I felt so ,even today.

<title>Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Gerhard Richter </title>
<description>Once I wrote that I was deeply influenced by some artists who has Germany roots. Recently , I remembered one movie which impressed itself on me during my student life. Though having no direct relation , the reason why I remember it that I found the fact in one article, it says” Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932 “ Oh, Richter was born in Dresden! I thought.
The title of that movie is “ Slaughter house 5 “. Novels by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, directed by George Roy Hill. When I was a junior highschool student, it was aired only once as a substitute for some kind of program ( may be ). And I tranced into the movie world perfectly when I watched it.
To tell the story in short, main character , one American , brought up on a bed of roses, entered U.S.Army and was sended in the western front of Europe in the Second World War. In December 1944 , One of the famous battle , so to speak “Battle of Bulge”, German forces attacked U.S.troops. Unfortunately he was captured and sended to the prisoner’s camp in Dresden where was called “ Slaughter house 5 “.
( Thema is completely different from the problem of race , like Juden camp and so on )
Every day he worked monotorous camp’s labor , and saw German boys and old souldiers protecting and gurding this city. In addition , a strange colleage( may be crazy ) came to have a hate against him on accident.
One day Dresden was bombed seriously by Allied Air Force. When he went out from the shelter with many colleages and enemy German souldiers, he looked at the burning Dresden changed from splended and romantic historical city. One boy , young German souldier , started to cry and runninig into fire , shouting someone’s name , maybe his girl friend.
After the war, he succeeded in business in America . But his family suffered bad fates.
At the last , he was shooted by that crazy man ( returned from the war together ), this is the end.
We feel something very curious in watching this movie, because comfortable life with girl in the doom on some planet is inserted many times . Story is carried as omunibus
, real life and scene of science fiction .
A junior highschool student , me , when I saw this movie on TV , I was deeply impressed and had continued to think “ What is it? What is this story?” day after day.
In the University days, I encountered a friend who know the title of this movie. So, at last, I could make clear .
It was usual that one continue to think about something throughout many years because of the lack of information , different from today , without internet which make easy for us to get information all around.
A few years ago I got a VHS video tape by yahoo auction, and watched it. I could see many splendid view of Dresden City and felt that “Slaughter house 5” is a good movie indeed. I was surprised that the impression was exactly the same when I watched as a teenager. This story is maiden work of Kurt Vonnegut Jr. It was said biography.
After the WWⅡ,United States of America denied this genocide of Dresden, and tried to hide . Vonnegut was a famous ,new-left writer in ’80. ( he passed away in 2007 ) known as anti-establishment .
Sorry my wandering away...... Richter should have been experienced Dresden Bomb when he was 13. It’s like Hiroshima meaning for us Japanese. What did he think about？when he looked over his home town Dresden burnning. Big waves of great 20’s century flooded repeatedly many times to him , the after days also.

We cannot feel such things only looking his paintings......
