Being held in Sompo Japan Museum of Art . 1,000yen. I feel it reasonable. Perhaps it is necessary for us to go Italy to see the real masterpieces of Giotto under usual circumstance. So this time is rare chance for whom like original but for fakes ,to see them on staying in this Tokyo Japan. But one who lacks eager to see original works may pass this show. As for me , I like recent adequate replicas. I am a man who is able to be satisfied with copies , but for original works without hesitation. One of the reason is that recent technique for copying masterpieces have been developed at unbelievable level.
I've not been to Europe yet. So I saw real fresco for the first time. Strictly speaking, the object we can see there is only a piece of fragment believed Giotto made. Fresco have not been naturalised into Japan throughout the whole history. It’s completely the original technique of art in Europe. I ‘d have the knowledge that it likes a kind of wall painting,of which making process is to let the painting materials penetrate into the wet pluster before dry. Plusterer don’t use variable color plusters. They use only one kind of pluster. And using it,simultaneously they let the color penetrate into the pluster and draw , and sliding their own body toward the write , ( or leftward ) day after day, I hear. Wether only a piece of fragment is enough to be worth showing or not is the point which critics may differ .We must take the different stance for seeing like these works in 13th century from that of modern works. Cambus as supporting materials had not existed yet then. As for supporting materials in this show are, generally speaking, “board”. And they are believed to have been unfastened from many kinds of shrine. So we should take the way of seeing historical objects , not painting made in recent centuries. In short, we must be conscious of the the elements of their original situation more than that of their independence as art. They are the fragments of history . It is necessary for us to use our imagination fully when we see them. Much less who lacks knowledge about historical view of 13th century see only the element of ancient technique or arabesque of colors that seems to be simply childish for them.
As for me - lacks knowledge about medieval ages in Europe-having only
amateur way of appreciating. But this exhibition gives us professional explanation and many nice comments. So we can make clear the image of unknow world "ancient Italy". I've been satisfied.
In the 13th century, paintings were made by family , not by single man. They were produced in collaboration. Giotto is announced as a boss , foreman or master of family, I felt it fairly correct.
