Ishigaki Island is the epitome of exotic, and with a hint of nostalgia, it exhibits its own mystical charm. It’s surrounded by stunning coral reefs and green mountains, is home to many charming locals, and offers captivating music and delicious local delights. Come and discover the hidden secrets of Ishigaki Island! An adventure through design is about to begin!
USIO Design Project calls for redesign ideas for 10 local specialty products from Ishigaki Island. The designs should fully communicate the products’ allures and leverage the stories behind these Ishigaki-made items, the island’s people and their local-grown knowledge.
The winners of the selected designs will be invited to Ishigaki Island to meet with the local manufacturers and discuss with them about how their designs will be commercialized and go on sale as new Ishigaki Island specialty products.
About the USIO Design Project
The USIO Design Project invites people to rediscover the allures of Ishigaki Island through the power of design.
The project strives to invite people to the island like the tides of the ocean, and create a rich mix of cultures that come together like a rip.With hubs in Ishigaki, Tokyo and Taipei, the project is designed to bring the local products, people and wisdom of Ishigaki Island together with the creativity of designers from around the world, discovering the local areas and their products, sharing ideas, and creating stories for tomorrow.

What kind of place is Ishigaki Island?
Ishigaki Island is the gateway to the Yaeyama Island Group situated in the southernmost tip of Japan. For centuries, it’s been home to a unique local culture that stems from a blend of the Ryukyu, Japanese and Taiwanese cultures. The allures of the island, which is frequented by many tourists, shine all the more brightly thanks to the island’s unique diversity.

USIO Design Project—Overview of the design contest
October 22 (Tues) – December 9 (Mon), 2013
Items for redesign:
Ten local Ishigaki Island products including confectionary, crafts, alcoholic beverages, and farm and marine products.
Merits for selected designs:
・Winning designs will be commercialized and go on sale from April 2014
・Once the winning designs have been commercialized, the final products will be showcased online on such sites as the USIO Design Project official website and Loftwork.com, as well as be promoted proactively as a new brand of products through PR activities on and off the island.
Winning designs will receive the following rewards/prizes:
1. Creators of selected designs will be invited to visit Ishigaki Island for 2 nights / 3 days.
(tentatively scheduled for some time in January 2014)*
2. Winners will receive a number of their own redesigned products.
3. Be awarded with local Ishigaki Island specialty products.
*In the event that winners reside overseas, the host will cover their transportation costs up to a certain amount (equivalent of a domestic fare within Japan).
Anyone can participate.
* Submissions to loftwork.com require registration with the site. Registration is completely free of charge (no annual charges or service fees).
About the selection:
・That the design exhibits elements of novelty and surprise to those who see it
・That the design is organic, simplistic and effectively represents Ishigaki Island
・That the design is a “seller” with potential to be a long-term, popular item.
