COMPETITIONS10,000 Creators Meet PASS THE BATON vol.4: JINS eyeglasses

2014/11/13Update

The power of design transforms leftover resin pieces into new products. Two winning entries have been chosen.

For vol. 4 of the 10,000 Creators Meet PASS THE BATON project, we invited submission of design ideas for new products made using leftover eyeglass frame resin pieces provided by eyewear brand JINS. The competition received 91 submissions that take advantage of the easy workability and variety of colors of these resin pieces in hopes of transforming the staggering 4,000,000 of these resin pieces that are produced each year into intriguing products. The judging has concluded, and it has been decided that two of the designs will move forward to become actual products. Incredibly, both of the winning designs were submitted by the same creator.

This is the fourth and final volume of the 10,000 Creators Meet PASS THE BATON open competition project, where we joined with creators to consider the theme of “NEW RECYCLE.” Please enjoy the results of the judging.

Chosen Creation

mano-keisuke “Ka-Sa-Ne [Brooch]”

Concept

A brooch with fun layered colors.
The brooch was made using narrow acetate sample pieces.
This brooch is a direct result of the fun I had arranging, layering, and pondering these pieces.
I wanted to make a simple brooch that you’d never get tired of.

Comments

キギ 植原This wasn’t the only idea about turning the resin pieces into an accessory, but I felt that this work was the best with regard to commercialization. I feel like it somehow has a connection with eyeglasses. I can’t wait to see the final product. (Mr. Uehara from KIGI)

林千晶I was impressed at how pretty it is for a test piece. I could see a great accessory series, earrings, necklaces, and so on, based on this concept. (Hayashi from Loftwork)

mano-keisuke ”Glasses-duck”

Concept

I tried arranging the resin pieces I received into a katakana “ha” shape.
One resin piece was yellow, so it sort of reminded me of a duck’s feet.
The next resin pieces I placed looked like wings.
The notion of your glasses growing feet is kind of a fun idea for a stand.
It might be even better if the beak could be detached and used as a screwdriver for your glasses.

Comments

キギ 渡邉
I really liked the fact that it has an association with glasses. I tried actually arranging some resin pieces during the judging (photo below), and this idea just got even cuter. Taking advantage of the natural shape of the resin pieces and gluing them together is also a good idea. (Mr. Watanabe from KIGI)

JINS prize

Although they won’t become products, the following two entries were considered unique ideas and were selected for a special prize from JIN Co., Ltd.
The winners will be receiving a prize of JINS PC(R) products.

Masaki Kano “Block Chair”

Concept

“Use all 4,000,000 pieces!!”

It may be something that no one has seen before.
It has an overwhelming presence.

A chair made simply by stacking resin pieces.

Is it convenient? Is it strong? Heavy?
I’m not sure that such things even matter.

Because I think I want to see it.
Out of curiosity.

Because I don’t think anyone has seen anything like it.

There aren’t many opportunities to use so many resin pieces.

You can’t understand unless you try and make it.

It has a luxurious magic.

So, there isn’t any point in thinking about it.

Comments from Hitoshi Tanaka

I was charmed by its overwhelming dynamism. I don’t know how many resin pieces it would actually take, but I had certainly never thought of using such an amount to make a chair, so I think I’d like to see it, too. It has good feelings of freedom and transcendence.

Comments from Isao Yamura

Someone was going to come up with this idea. However, the truly striking audacity and overwhelming sense of scale really stood out to me.

hanakitacore ‘Colorful Clip “With”’

Concept

An “ordinary but new” clip
To the ordinary function of a clip to hold things, I added the decoration of layers of acetate, the luxury of tortoiseshell, and a wide variety of colors and prints to create a clip that could also be used as an accessory.

The title “With” comes from how the clip resembles two people facing one another when viewed from the side, the pairing of two types of acetate in the construction, and the idea of adding decoration to function.

Many variations are possible depending on what is combined.
I thought about printing onto the clips from the eyeglass frame printing. In addition to characters, I also want to print graphics and patterns.

Comments from Hiroshi Tanaka

I got the impression this could be turned into a product right away. I don’t think there’s ever been such a stylish clip. The acetate material is higher quality than normal plastic. So I think if you made a clip from it, it would be a pretty good item. Using this idea to make clothespins would also make drying your laundry more fun.

Comments from Isao Yamura

I thought it was cute at first glance. Since the prototype visuals looked really cute, I was impressed, and really felt I wanted to try and make it.
