草津 by kwkm_

kusatsu_com

Comment from Winner
This work expresses my desire to relax in Kusatsu Onsen at the end of the year when things are busy and I’m a bit tired.
If I ever visit Kusatsu I would love to take a dip in the hot spring and share a drink with the monkeys while enjoying the snowy scenery.

Comment from Judge 評審評語 (Dainippon Typo Organization):
The characters for Kusatsu, “草津,” call to mind the image of snow accumulating around a hot spring. Organizing the elements together while cleverly using only the necessary lines, the characters that form the word have a softness to their shape. The lovely pure simplicity of a stark, snowy landscape with only the merest hint of steam ghosting over the surface is just as beautiful — nothing out of place, nothing more than needed.
Seeing the wild monkeys warm themselves in the hot spring is an adorable sight that makes you just want to hop in and join them. If I am pushed to say it, when the major characters of the word are too centrally placed, it might be fun to try to break them with the natural balance that only a hot spring has.

澁谷 by miltz

shibuya_com

Comment from Winner
Thank you for this award.I’m elated but I have to wonder…..were you able to read “Shibuya”? I imagine it would have been hard…
I usually draw graphics that are like half words and half pictures , and while they maintain the form of kanji they are unrecognizable as letters.
Please view these as lines that were formerly kanji that have now lost their meaning.

Comment from Judge 評審評語 (Dainippon Typo Organization):
The characters for Shibuya, “澁谷,” are made of an odd collection of elements. These elements suggest such things as bones, or smoke, and which themselves call to mind the places disorderly crowds, and the dangerous edge that seems to permeate the atmosphere in the backstreets. The horizontal element of the lettering, which appear to come and go around the front and back, also has a 3D appeal to it which is very useful. The comparison with the intense salmon-pink color scheme of the lettering has a gently calming effect.

六本木 by harunashimizu

roppongi_com

Comment from Winner
Thank you so much for selecting me out of this fine crowd. I am so thrilled! I have been to Roppongi in the afternoon and nighttime. Nighttime in Roppongi made a strong impression on me for being a gorgeous area for adults. I produced this piece with the aim of expressing – through lettering – the facial expressions on drunk women’s faces as they go home from work through this adult area of nighttime Roppongi. Expressing facial expressions via lettering isn’t an easy thing to do, but I found it extremely interesting and fun. I would like to continue searching for various other expressions in the future. Thank you so much.

Comment from Judge 評審評語 (Dainippon Typo Organization):
The nighttime image of Roppongi is elegantly produced using simple lines and a tiny bit of pink shine within a grey-ish color. The typography is slightly italic, and yet the way it has been placed diagonally looks good. I wonder if the double lines are meant to represent lips…? If they do represent lips, then I wonder if the ‘holes’ above it represent eyelashes… Your imagination can truly run wild with this piece.
The characters for ‘本’, and ‘木’ have both strokes written from the left and right. The vertical line in the center isn’t completely central – if written slightly to the right that it makes the character look more wide. If this is the case, then for the character for ‘本’, should the small horizontal line in the middle be longer/wider than the one written for ‘木’? It’s good to look at these kinds of small details to produce great pieces of work.

京都 by Gi

kyoto_com

Comment from Winner
Thank you for choosing my creation.
As a resident of Kyoto I thought about how to express the atmosphere of Kyoto and came up with the “karesansu”, a traditional Japanese dry landscape garden, for the motif.
I hope you are able to feel the delicate beauty and refinement of Kyoto.

Comment from Judge
The Chinese characters of Kyoto are depicted in the form of the Japanese rock garden (aka ‘karesansui’), capturing the image of the city. The interwoven pattern of the two Chinese characters reminds people of traditional ‘knot’.

kaminarimon_com

Comment from Winner
“Kaminarimon” is one of my practice and experimental work for me. I never thought I would see the cometition “地名設計”. Besides, I never expected my work selected as winner. I appriciate Loftwork and Jugdes ! I am looking forward to see many works of Kanji Typography at various places.

Comment from Judge
The Chinese characters of Kaminarimon are reconfigured impeccably in a round frame. Although the design is based on peony lettering style, simpler lines are used to reconstruct the work, and have successfully presented a high degree of spatial smoothness through the concept of symmetry and average segmentation. This is a stunning piece of work.

terui-edogawa_com

Comment from Winner
I am honored to have been chosen.
I expressed a river in Edogawa, Tokyo with light blue gradation.

Comment from Judge
This piece of work turns the strokes of the Chinese characters of Edogawa into geometric graphics that spread across the entire layout, meanwhile, each stroke is made distinctive by different layers of blue colors, which are hints about river – the meaning of Edogawa.

takao-ok_com

Comment from Winner
Thank you very much for bestowing this award. Kaohsiung is in my birthplace area and it is a town filled with neon signs around the Binro stalls and night markets. Before coming to Japan, I mocked this type of area for being ‘cheesy’, or ‘ugly’. But since living overseas, I have come to realize that this very ‘cheesiness’, or ‘ugliness’ has a nostalgic charm to it. I found myself searching for images of these kind of scenes to make myself feel happy.
This piece uses red and green, colors that are often used in signs around Binro stalls. I hope that the viewer can sense the local Taiwanese beauty, charm and power through this piece.

Comment from Judge 評審評語 (Dainippon Typo Organization):
The first time I took a trip to Taiwan and saw the characters for ‘WARNING’ (注意), they almost looked like katakana or hiragana characters. I remember that I felt like I could almost pronounce it, even though I didn’t know the Taiwanese pronunciation. The strange lettering of the characters for ‘WARNING’ felt very Taiwanese to me. It might be fun to learn Chinese characters when they are joined together in this way. I challenged myself to this task.
Gaining a bit more self-confidence, I set out large, sign-style lettering for ‘Binro stalls’. I thought that it would have even more appeal if the lettering energetically connected with the phonetics and characters.

Shilin 士林 (Night Market) by Rachel Kaoo 高琬清

rachel_com

Comment from Winner
I am very happy that loftwork.com organized this design competition. I am also very grateful to loftwork’s review panel for selecting my works for commendation. Apart from enabling me to learn more about the places and local features of Taiwan and Japan through everyone’s works, it has also given an opportunity for my works to be seen by everyone.

Comment from Judge 評審評語 (Dainippon Typo Organization):
Here, the elements are streamlined for a deft portrayal of the appearance of the Night Market. The white space between the forks in the middle of the 林 character is skillfully creative. The color scheme is also unique; depicting spots where warm colors, which usually wind-up being used with green light, here instead engenders the air of suspicion – characteristic of a night market – and is part of the pieces appeal. Attempting also to incorporate lines that somehow seem organic and uncoordinated – to include the chaotic worldview of a night market – perhaps expands the image even further!

Comment from Winner
I would like to thank you the judges for approving of my work. I think I am far from being perfect, so this award means a lot to me. My gratitude also goes to my supervisor, without your support and advice, I would not have received this honor. I have the rare privilege of coming across many great ideas and works in this contest, I will continue to put in efforts and hopefully can create more good works in the future.

Comment from Judge
The author has done an excellent job in merging the scenic features of Keelung Miaokou, such as the temple and lanterns, into the Chinese characters of Keelung while retaining the aesthetic beauty, different elements also echo harmoniously with each another.

Comment from Winner
Glory to God! Thank you judges for approving of my work. I am getting nervous about the upcoming exhibition and how the audience look at my work. I hope that my work Ji-ji not only symbolizes a beautiful township of Taiwan, but also a place with sustainable development. I wish people would become more eco-friendly. Formosa Rock!!
Formosa Rock!!

Comment from Judge
The characters are outlined with handwriting like strokes, which depicts an optimal degree of abstraction and use of colors, it also reminds people of the green Jiji township.
