Sketch event report “PauseDraw at Loftwork Vol.2”

13

PauseDraw at Loftwork” was held in the event space Loftwork Lab in Shibuya on Saturday, June 8, where people got together and enjoyed sketching in various places.

PauseDraw is an event, planned and held regularly by the illustrators Luis Mendo and Adrian Hogan. The concept is to meet new people and enjoy finding something new, while drawing pictures. Here is the report of the day when 30 people in total enjoyed sketching to their hearts’ content.

We planned to sketch outside while having a picnic, but unfortunately it rained due to the rainy season. First everyone gathered on the 10th floor of Loftwork in Shibuya, Tokyo.

13

This time there were 30 participants. Many of them participated in the previous event too.

13

Even if you don’t have drawing materials, don’t worry. You can use any drawing materials provided by STAEDTLER, such as watercolor pencils, brushes and pens, as much as you like. What a luxury to be able to use so much! Of course you can bring your own favorite drawing materials too.

13

The event started with some games to break the ice.

We did some easy sketching between the people who met each other for the first time; 1. After looking at the person in front of you for a minute, draw him/her without looking at the person. 2. Draw him/her without looking at the paper, but you can look at the person.

13

A little bit awkward at first as they were looking at each other face to face while drawing, but eventually they got very exited.

13

This is my face, sketched by someone without looking at the paper. It was a good opportunity to get someone to draw my portrait.

After warming up, the main sketching started. We were divided into 3 groups to do sketching.

Team Luis:Saigouyama Park

13

Team Luis went to Saigouyama Park in the rain. The park has various scenes, and it’s a good place to go for sketching. Some hydrangeas were blooming too.

13

This dog unexpectedly joined in as a model. A surprise like this is one of the funny things that happen to you when you sketch outside.

13

Was he saying, “Sketch me!” His valiant pose made us draw more in our sketchbooks.

Team Adrian:Hachiko

Team Adrian went sketching in front of Shibuya station, which was full of people. You can discover something new, if you stop at an ordinary scene you always see and sketch it.

Sketching patterns of the umbrellas of the people walking. Their colorful patterns are lovely.

Some people were interested in what we were doing.. They asked us what sort of event we were taking part in.

Indoors

13
You don’t always have to go out to sketch. There are lots of objects to sketch in the room. You can enjoy sketching wherever you are with some paper and pens.

13
Thanks to being indoors and having drawing materials, many colorful sketches were drawn.

After all the teams came back, each of us made a presentation of our favourite work.
13
Good usage of water color for drawing tiles in the park in the rain.

13
She sketched a scene at Fabcafe. Drawing things in every day life, this turned out like an illustrated journal.

13
He sketched Hikarie in the rain. He was imagining its facial expression.

Lastly, we decided to sketch the scenary outside of the window. It’s all up to you where you start to draw Shibuya. As far as you can see.

13

13
Then we placed all of the sketches side by side and Shibuya made from the sketches appeared !

13
Even when you are sketching the same scenary, it doesn’t matter what you focus on, all of the sketchers create different moods. You can see the individuality of each sketcher.

13
After the event, people started mingling together spontaneously, enjoying conversations. We heard a lot of stories as people came from different backgrounds; a creator who sketches on a regular basis, or someone who has not drawn pictures since he was a student, and wanted to do it again.

The event can be enjoyed by a lot of people, such as those who are busy and are not able to go out so much, or those who want to make new personal connections. Please join “PauseDraw”, if you have already participated or if you have not.
