2012 loftwork collection calendar: What is the theme for the loftwork calendar this year?

What was 2011 like for everyone? As a portal site connecting creators and those who love being creative, and as a place that is appealing and delivers creativity to the world, Loftwork was able to establish a channel of communication between everyone. In 2012, we hope to offer a place where even more people who demand creativity can meet. This does not just mean communication through our web site, but perhaps also through communication in person. We hope to spread creativity with many different activities and in many different ways!

So for the loftwork 2012 calendar, we are setting the theme as “spreading” and decorated the 12 months of the year using the magnificent works of 12 creators from various areas of design – including the web, 3D, illustration, and textile design.
For this page, we would like to introduce messages from the creators who supplied their works. In addition, we will draw the names of 20 individuals and send them a copy of the “2012 loftwork collection calendar”! Please refer to the end of the article for how to submit your entry for this gift. We are looking forward to your submissions.

Illustrations involving paper medium/mobile content, with focus on lyrical illustrations.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
I used great care in drawing something that captured the feeling of the seasons of each month for this first picture. Brought together with a beloved traditional Japanese design, it depicts the bustling arrival of spring. It is a curious piece, drawn solidly with an unusual background.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I hope to make it an even more enriching year, where I will make great progress.

February: shichigoro-shingo

Creator introduction::shichigoro-shingo
Creates works using Photoshop, with themes of small, positive emotions amidst slightly dark atmospheres.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
While being mechanical and inorganic, I rounded it out it to give it a toy-like atmosphere – to draw out a sense of fun and playfulness. Since the hues are monochrome and dull, I used some red to see what would happen.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
Last year, thanks to loftwork, I had my work accepted in the CC poster competition, plus my work was chosen as best in class at ASIA GRAPH 2011, so for me it was a precious year that will always stay with me. This coming year I hope to have my works seen by many more people, and I want to cherish each day while continuing to create.

March: Mayuko Okura

Creator introduction::Mayuko Okura
Creates vividly drawn colorful worlds with animals, plants and young girls as a motif, making illustrations for the covers of publications using watercolors.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
I created this work with the motif of plants, animals and young girls in mind using watercolors. The work was drawn to show the figure of a young girl, flowing to and fro like fish in the middle of spring rains. I was aiming to create a work where those who look upon it will be able to let their imaginations go free.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I hope that even more people will become familiar with my works, and I hope that I can become an even better artist.

April: Hirofumi Abe

Works that employ lettering techniques with colored inks, and art/designs using letters as a basis, through utilization of graphics software

Q. Please tell us about your work.
Using “the colors of Japan” as the theme’s basis, I created the work using a motif of blue colors and characters. It’s an experimental work that says “Let’s refine Japan’s ‘omnibus culture’ from a negative thing into a positive one!” It’s like it says “even a mixed up culture is a good one, isn’t it?!”

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I wish to not only enhance my design and art, but myself as well. In a positive way!

May: Emma Sky

Creator introduction: Emma Sky
Rough lines using minimal colors; moments captured that depict the lives of the inhabitants of imaginary worlds.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
I drew this with May as the theme. There was once a time when I saw countless numbers of carp banners hung over a river flowing through a park, and I wanted to express the impact that moment had on me.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I want to keep healthy, and pass the days with care and civility.

June: Maruko Ueda

* Clicking on the image will take you to the creator’s portfolio page.

Creator introduction:Maruko Ueda
Activity centered on apparel-related graphics and illustrations and textile patterns. She’s developing the textile-focused project “H:UG”

Q. Please tell us about your work.
“That town” is like the model answer to a “happy world,” where animals and people live in harmony, and multicolored flowers bloom in profusion. This work was drawn for textile purposes.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I hope to work and play as much as I can. I didn’t get around much this year, so I want to go to various places next year. I hope that life will be fun.

July: Kenichi Tanaka

* Clicking on the image will take you to the creator’s portfolio page.

Creator introduction:Kenichi Tanaka
Good at design using European typography, in recent years he has received praise from around the world, even in the field of video.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
It’s the front cover for the CD jacket of my friend’s acoustic bad “Belles&Whistles;.” This time I did the entire branding. The picture was taking using a film camera, and I ventured to use the logo sketch in the middle of the work as the main visual. Plus, because it was a band with taste, I was able to deliver something that had a handmade flavor at the same time, from the MV that was created, to their business cards. Please take a look at that, too.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I have an interest in motion graphics, and in recent years I’ve received a number of offers, so I would like to pursue video works in earnest. Currently I’m studying 3D and on-the-spot photography, so next year I would like to attain reliable skills in that area. I would also like to try my hand at being a VJ, so someone please invite me! Haha.

August: DAFFY JUICE

* Clicking on the image will take you to the creator’s portfolio page.

Creator introduction:DAFFY JUICE
Forte in illustrations with motifs of characters that give simple, unisex impressions.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
I routinely draw people, but recently I’ve come to harmonize with this touch. Maybe it’s the separation from the Japanese body shape, or the boldness and glamour, but I try as much as I can to keep a simple design in mind as I illustrate. I fundamentally create works that I myself would want to hang in my room. Because this is the August entry of the calendar, “Summer!” is expressed in all facets of image and color.
* August 8th is loftwork Day, so I used its yellow image color across the whole picture.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I had decided that I would definitely do a one-man exhibition in 2011, but the year passed by before I knew what was going on…so in 2012, I’m going to do my first one-man exhibition! I also hope to attend a number of other exhibitions. And I hope to have many people see my work, and not just draw. I also want to do some binding work. Drawing book covers is my first and foremost goal.

September: Yukinori Mitsukiyo

* Clicking on the image will take you to the creator’s portfolio page.

Creator introduction: Yukinori Mitsukiyo
Good at using scenery and junk machines as a motif, with a delicate touch that expresses gigantic illustrations in a retro way.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
It was created in 2008. It’s a work that was drawn for an exhibition group called “Showa Ether Exhibition.” In the past I’d drawn a picture of a caterpillar with a house over it, and I thought it would be even more interesting if it was drawn at the level of a city block, so I created this piece.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I hope to have many more experiences and meet many more people, not just in pictures, but all genres. I also enjoy traveling, so next year I want to take a lap around Shikoku on my motorcycle. As far as pictures go, I hope to actively expand my field of work.

October: Shinori Kobayashi

* Clicking on the image will take you to the creator’s portfolio page.

Creator introduction: Shinori Kobayashi
Main body of work is line sketching, developing illustrations that have a delicate touch and fine attention to detail.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
What’s happening inside those tents? I think there are people quietly appreciating a performance, those enjoying it with boisterous applause, those attending the performance with others, plus a multitude of other elements. But what I hope is for those looking at the piece to have fun imagining what’s going on. I drew the picture with this in mind, as well as appreciating art of the fall.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
This year I spent my days straightforwardly for the sake of next year. Next year I hope to continue creating works, and use them as the basis for promoting myself, just as I have been doing up until now.

November: TABO..

* Clicking on the image will take you to the creator’s portfolio page.

Creator introduction: TABO.
Creates illustrations focused on characters and 3DCG. Has created illustrations and characters for television and advertisements.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
These are characters that I create on a daily basis. I create about 2-3 colored characters a week using the expressions and attire that I want to make. I don’t really worry about the setup, but am particular when it comes to the outward appearance.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
I hope to engage in various character works, and create a short animation. I’d also like to create a character fashion collection.

December: Minoru

* Clicking on the image will take you to the creator’s portfolio page.

Creator introduction:Minoru
Illustrator. Using animals and people as a motif, he has a large number of works that combine these elements and have a unique atmosphere.

Q. Please tell us about your work.
I drew a picture of the Moon Princess and an astronaut who went chasing after her.
The image isn’t the Moon Princess from folklore, but one that is more modern. It was lots of fun drawing outer space.

Q. What are your hopes for this coming year?
Next year won’t be any different from this year, as I won’t stop at just “drawing” illustrations, and will develop a variety of projects. I also want to present my works in a number of places. I won’t let go of this insatiable desire, and will continue to do my best.
